Joy in Christ

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

The third candle of Advent is joy. When you hear the word joy we often think of freedom from difficulty or distress but that is not the kind of joy Paul is speaking of in Galatians 5:22. The joy he is speaking of is a fruit of the spirit, meaning, it doesn’t come from things but from within, the spirit of God living inside of all believers. It is a joy that recognizes that even when everything isn’t well, it is His spirit that elevates us to a higher understanding that defies human logic.
