Worth More Than Gold

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”says the Teacher.“Utterly meaningless!Everything is meaningless.”Ecclesiastes 1:1Is this true? If it is then why do people toil? You exercise the same routine day after day. The kids are rushed out to school, you prepare for work, you rush to a job filled with unmet deadlines and you’re feeling anxious and under-appreciated. Afterwards there are meetings to attend, soccer practice, tee ball, piano lessons, baseball practice etc. etc. etc. You get the message, you’re toiling and toiling exerting the same energy day in and day out. One can get so busy that they forget what brings significance to life.King Solomon had it all, even his drinking cups were made of gold. He owned ships, thousands of chariots and horses (see 2 Chronicles 9) and more. Solomon was richer and wiser than any other king in the world yet he calls these possessions meaningless.Consider the clothing you wore years ago. You probably wouldn’t wear it today but if you live long enough you’ll probably see it again. And what about when you saved for that first car. Whether it was your dream car or a hooptie (an old dilapidate car), both got you where you were going. The point is this, it’s okay to have material possessions but they vanish with time. James calls life a vapor (James 4:14), it’s here for a while and then it’s gone. Placing value on meaningless things can never satisfy. However a life lived filled with unconditional love is invaluable.If you want to live a meaningful life, learn to love freely and selflessly. All else is really doesn’t matter.
