The Weapon of Faith

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 1 Samuel 17:46-47He was but a youth, ruddy, and of fair countenance. No matter what he looked like he had the confidence of someone twice his size. It was a God size initiative he pursued, one that could only be done with unwavering faith. Ridiculed by his brothers and mocked by the enemy, David was unafraid of taking on tough tasks. God didn’t tell him to do it but he had such righteous indignation that he put his fear aside and did what others couldn’t or were incapable of doing which was to kill Goliath. A mere shepherd boy accomplished a great feat. The bible said it was his bold stance, his strong conviction, that rendered his success; “ Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied (1 Samuel 17:45)”.The story of David and Goliath isn’t merely about a young boy slaying a giant, it is also about overcoming a seemingly impossible situation by trusting in God. God did not tell David to go and kill Goliath but David had such abhorrence for Goliath’s utter disregard for God and God’s people. He may have also been influenced by the promise to the one who would kill Goliath; “and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel (1 Samuel 17:25b).” Whatever his motivator, he wasn’t going to be deterred.When you’re facing a battle or seemingly overwhelming obstacles, situations that seek to destroy and rob the peace and security that the Lord promises you’re facing Goliath’s. So what’s yours? Remove the veil of fear and “face your giant”."Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
