The Lord is Our Spiritual Gardener
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful (John 15:1-2).”
Anyone who likes gardening understands that to be a good one takes a lot of hard work both mentally and physically. Depending on how elaborate you want your garden to be determines the amount of energy that must go into it. Understanding the soil, the position of the sun during various times of the day, knowing what will grow well and where for best results, and knowing that it requires ongoing maintenance and dedication is key.
Growing spiritually is also hard work. Dedicating time and effort to develop your relationship with God requires mindful spiritual practices like prayer, devotion, and ongoing commitment. It not only supports good spiritual growth but develops the beauty that God sees in you.
So, the next time you pick up that hand trowel, or those pruning shears, the garden gloves, or garden spade or that hose and spray nozzle, remind yourself of the similar care and effort that God takes in growing you.
