Selfless
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4Unexpected, disastrous, painstaking, unbelievable, horrific, heartbreaking; what words can really describe the events of September 11, 2001. Many lives were lost and those whose lives were spared were left to understand the events of that day. We still seek to understand and to make sense of the loss of innocent lives. And yet even in this atrocious event there were a group of selfless people who ran to it to help in any way they could even at the risk of their own lives. They didn’t concern themselves with the danger but they did it out of a sense of compassion and duty. They are heroes for sure but more than that, they demonstrated the kind of action and attitude we all should have as followers and disciples of Christ.Selflessness is a unique gift that is given for the benefit of another. They are simple acts of kindness, providing a listening ear, volunteering, exercising patience, and giving to others with no expectation of receiving anything in return and the greatest demonstration of this was Christ’s sacrificial death. As we remember this day in our history may we all seek to exercise selflessness. It not only gives life meaning it gives meaning to the life of others.
