O’ Come Emmanuel

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us (Matthew 1:23).”

One of the great songs of Christmas time; “O Come O Come Emmanuel”. The words don’t provoke what is necessarily thought of at Christmastime. It conveys the desire of a people who have been left out or forgotten. While it lacks the celebratory tone of a typical Christmas carol it expresses a plea for the Savior to come, to redeem His people. Today, we have Emmanuel (God is with us). So let us rejoice in the Savior who has already come!

“O come, O come, Emmanuel,

And ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here,

Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.”
