Hunger Satisfied
“We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:11-14Our appetite is influenced by more than just hunger. There are situational as well as psychological factors that affect the desire to satisfy a bodily need, a longing. Notice I didn’t just suggest that our appetite is just driven by food. There are many drivers, things that cause one to seek satisfaction. Sometimes it is the inner cravings, the things you think, and what you pursue to satisfy a yearning. As infants, milk satisfies a physical need but if they are only given milk and not provided with any other stimuli that infant would not thrive or grow in the manner he or she should. A babies mind, their muscle coordination and other areas also need to be nourished. This same concept is applicable to spiritual development. Milk is fine for infants but if you want to experience continued growth you need solid food.Solid food, solid teaching is for the spiritually mature. They are the ones whose actions and attitude demonstrate the character of Christ. It is when you have accepted Christ, experienced a spiritual awakening, your born again experience (however you identify it), that is when you are on the road to spiritual maturity. That is when you not only hear the word but you digest it because you’ve opened yourself up to receive it, no longer spiritual babies. To the one who loves Him there is no scarcity of His word. “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth (Psalm 119:103).” “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled (Matthew 5:6).”
