Godly Advice

February 5, 2019“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22In the book of 2 Kings 12, is the story of a man by the name of Rehoboam. He had gone to a place called Shechem where Israel had gone to make him king. An assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam asking that he lighten the labor that they suffered at the hands of his father. Rehoboam listened to them but requested that he have three days to consider their request. King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father and they gave him good advice, advice that would result in a favorable outcome. But he did not like such advice and decided to go to the young men he had grown up with whose advice was adverse to that of the elders. You can only imagine what the outcome would be and it was not favorable for King Rehoboam (see 2 Kings 12:1-22).

Making decisions isn’t always easy but when well informed you can make decisions that yield good results. King Rehoboam sought other advice because he didn’t like the advice of those who were familiar with his father’s harsh reign. So he decided to seek out those who would say what he wanted to hear and the outcome was disastrous. When making decisions listen to sound advice, better yet godly advice and seek out those who demonstrate the wisdom of God’s word. The Word of God is filled with good counsel and the best counsel comes from Christ alone.“And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6b©2018-2019 Mamie Johnson Ministries
