GOD is Always With You

“Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac (Genesis 21:9-10).”

We often hear of the child of promise, Isaac, but rarely do we talk about Ishmael but more importantly we don’t talk about his mother Hagar. Hagar was the concubine of Abraham’s wife Sarah. She was obedient to Sarah and in her obedience a child was born. Sarah had taken into her own hands to do what God said he was going to do but let’s look at Hagar for a moment.

She was obedient, produced a male child whom Abraham assumed was going to be his legal heir since Sarah had yet to produce a child. Instead God did bless Sarah and she did have a son but the result was a jealous wife (Sarah) an ousted concubine (Hagar) and a child crying lost in the desert, running out of water and a mother with thoughts of death racing in her mind. Hagar was suffering both a mental and physical crisis brought on by the acts of someone else. However while Hagar may have thought she was alone and had no hope of surviving her circumstance the Lord heard the boy crying and the angel of God called to her.

The angel of God offered reassurance to Hagar that he would bless her son Ishmael. Hagar and Ismael never returned to the home of Abraham yet even in the desert God provided for their needs and made him a great nation.

In the bleakest of circumstances you can trust that you are not alone. God is with you.
