Blessed are the Pure in Heart
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” (Matthew 5:8)
So, you see a child in the middle of the store crying. What do you do? How about a family on the side of the road with a sign saying “hungry, will work for food”? Or maybe a child being bullied, do you remain silent and say to yourself, “the world is tough, they need to get thick skin so they can navigate what lies ahead.” How about walking through a door knowing there is someone close behind whose arms are full and you choose not to extend kindness by simply waiting a second or two to hold the door for them? Each of these examples asks the question, “what is in your heart?” It is your response to these and other scenarios that tell you who you are and what you’re made of.
Recently while speaking with a dear friend, she spoke of being tested to potentially be an organ donor for a close friend. Although she was not a compatible match, it demonstrated to me the kind of heart she has. She was and is selfless, always seeking to help someone, and more often than not goes out of her way when she sees someone in need. While she may see it as her gift, I see it as someone whom God sees as selfless and sacrificial. In fact, I found myself in query as to what my response would be in a case such as this. My friend would be the first to tell you she is no hero but that she saw a need and if she could do something about it, she would.
It is a question that we should all consider. What sacrifice would you be willing to make for the sake of another? Those who are pure in heart will go the extra mile, all out not just halfway. And it was Jesus who went that extra mile by giving us His all!!
