When You Pray
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God (2 Corinthians 1:3).”If you’ve ever tried to comfort a friend you know how hard it can be. You seek to identify with there suffering and yet you can’t find the words to say. Maybe there are no words but just being there, being present speaks volumes. When Jesus and three of his disciples traveled to a place called Gethsemane Jesus asked them to stay while He went off to pray. Jesus’ soul was overwhelmed and He prayed for relief but as He went to pray His disciples fell asleep. When Jesus returned He asked them “Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour (Luke 22:40)”.We can have the best of intentions but those intentions need to be matched with action. Telling someone you’ll pray for them is not the same as doing it. In prayer we are asking the Lord specific petitions thus showing support to the one who is in need of comfort and or deliverance. When we pray we are supporting others through our stance in the confident belief that God will answer. In a physical sense there may be nothing we can do to bring comfort to someone in distress but as believers we can always pray and through the power of prayer believe that there is nothing God can’t do.
