What I Needed

I’m sharing an excerpt from my new book, “Caught in the Undertow: God’s Rescue for Anxiety, Panic and Depression.” I thank God He was with me through my struggles and rescued me. Today, my hope is that my book will help you focus on God allowing Him to help you through yours.

I grew up in the 1960’s, when mental health was the last thing we dealt with in my community. We had racism, poverty, the war and the stresses of what was going on in our homes and the neighborhood. The struggles of our neighbors were not dissimilar to ours; it was hard to make a living. We weren’t allowed to talk about these struggles or in fact, anything that was going on at home. It’s no wonder I struggled and suffered. Emotional health is of least importance when your daily needs like food and shelter aren’t being met.

I sought understanding but was often dismissed, not because they didn’t want to help me. I think they didn’t know how to help me, as they didn’t have the capacity to understand how I was wired and what I needed.
