Open Our Eyes

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.Psalm 119:18The printing press was a significant influence to the Protestant ideology (a.k.a. The Protestant Reformation). Influenced by Theologian Martin Luther’s teachings, literacy (the ability to read, write, speak, and listen) should not be taken for granted.Fundamentally, literacy skills are vital to understanding scripture. Left to the explanation of another’s understanding could lead to misinterpretation and mislead one from the truth’s of God’s word. And while being literate is important in gaining understanding, of more importance is the need for the presence of the Holy Spirit. Since scripture was written by the supernatural presence of God given to men then it would deem that it (Holy Spirit) is vital in interpreting such.The text in Psalm 119:18 is a prayer seeking understanding of spiritual truth that is discerned by our spiritual nature. Attempting to use only literal language would water down the depth of His word and it’s meaning. Yes, God has given the gift of the preaching and teaching (Matthew 28:18-20) ministry for the purpose of instruction and knowledge but His will is not exclusive to them alone. God’s will is that all people be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4-5) to bring about God’s will and purpose. His word is a roadmap and guide.Begin with prayer, asking God to open your eyes to perceive the meaning of what you are reading. After you have read His word, meditate on His word. Meditation etches His word in your memory whereby you are able to call upon it during times of stress or need for encouragement. However not only that, but it (serves as a reminder of how much God loves you and is always present with you. Finally, in quiet meditation surrender your will to His authority.“Lord open our eyes, that we may behold your wondrous works, to understand your incomprehensible word, and to exercise thanksgiving in the love you have for us.” Amen
