Feed Your Spirit
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you (Matthew 6:16-18).”
We are more than flesh; we are also spirit and just as we wouldn’t neglect to feed our bodies we should also refuse to neglect to feed our spirit. Practices that feed the spirit include prayer, giving and fasting.
As many of you are preparing for the Lenten season (a time of reflection and preparation before the celebration of Easter replicating Jesus’ sacrifice), what are you being asked to do? Whether it is to give something up (e.g. coffee, chocolate etc.), to take something on (e.g. discipline) or to set specific goals, the ultimate objective is to identify with Christ’s suffering and our need for total dependence on Him. Some would argue that Lent is not biblically represented and they would be correct but how welcoming it is that we would break from the world culture to grow closer to and identify with Jesus Christ. So spend some time quietly seeking His will that you might die to yourself as you strive during this holy season to be more like Him.
