Find Peace in Turmoil

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her (Luke 10:41-42).”

Did you know that some mental unrest can be caused by our own actions? Consider the story of Mary and Martha found in Luke 10. Jesus and his disciples came to the village of the home where Martha and Mary resided. Martha obviously had great concern for making sure things were ready (concerned with appearances) and so she was busy ensuring her expectations were being met. Martha’s need of having things perfect didn’t seem to faze Mary. She didn’t allow her sister’s expectations to effect what was important to her.

When we try to get others to do what we want it can be a cause of emotional turmoil. Martha was obviously distressed by Mary’s lack of interest in helping her. You cannot make someone do what they have no interest in or don’t want to do. Even Jesus wasn’t concerned with the things that bothered Martha.

Jesus is the Prince of Peace and it was peace that Mary experienced as she sat at Jesus’ feet.
